Healthy turnout for Rushcliffe diabetes event

The NHS Long Term Plan commits to delivering better support for patients, carers and volunteers to enhance ‘supported self-management’ particularly of long-term health conditions, including diabetes.

More than 200 people went along to a type 2 diabetes health event on Saturday 6 April in West Bridgford town centre. The event was in support of Diabetes Prevention Week and run by colleagues from Rushcliffe CCG and Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Diabetes experts, including specialist nurses and a consultant in endocrinology, gave talks and answered questions on a range of diabetes topics. There were also health and wellbeing stands on the Croquet Lawn including information about foot care, medication and how to live well with the condition.

Retired driving instructor, John Burnett (pictured), 67, from West Bridgford promoted his newly launched diabetes support group which meets at Nottcutts Garden Centre.

John said: “I’ve been type 2 diabetic for the past 25 years. I know people can be confused and sometimes nervous when first diagnosed, but I want to spread the message that you can live well with diabetes and lead a full, active life. The event was great way for people to feel more supported and confident with managing their condition”.
